Welcome Message

It gives me great pleasure to welcome everyone to this important gathering. I am glad that there is now a consensus about the importance of pediatric dentistry in our profession and I am even more excited that we are all rallying to grow the field and optimize its potential.

I would like to thank Dean Arturo De Leon, President of The Philippine Association of Dental Colleges and to the deans and faculty members of all the 29 dental schools for the support they have given to this project and to PPDSI. This is a resounding validation of PPDSI's thrusts of promoting children’s oral health.

As our theme suggests, we all move as one. By working and collaborating together, I have no doubt that we will achieve our goal of improving the quality of education of our dental students our future colleagues in the profession. At the same time, enhance the teaching skills of the faculty to adapt to the ever changing times, especially during the pandemic. When we come together as one, we can then address oral health problems in our children, including those with special needs.

I want to thank and welcome Dr. Amr Moursi, Dr. Ron Kosinski, Dr. Richard Widmer and Dr. Neeta Prabhu for being part of this program! We are also heavily indebted to our partner, the UP College of Dentistry, headed by Dean Danilo Magtanong. And finally thank you to our sponsors for helping us mount this event.

On that note, I am looking forward to three days of productive learning and exchange of ideas and skills as we build and strengthen partnerships with the deans and faculty of our country's dental schools.

May I officially welcome everyone to this webinar! As we move as one toward our vision.

Thank you and welcome everybody! Mabuhay po tayong lahat!

Dr. Paul Plaridel Aguinaldo Abaya Jr.
PPDSI President 2019-2021

Speakers and Lectures

Professor Richard Widmer

Professor Richard Widmer

Dr. Richard Widmer received his Master's Degree in Paediatric Dentistry from the University of Melbourne. The majority of his paediatric clinical practice over the last 40 years has been at the Westmead Centre for Oral Health and The Children's Hospital at Westmead. He holds the position of Associate Clinical Professor in Paediatric Dentistry, The University of Sydney, and Head of the Dental Department at the Children's Hospital at Westmead. He is a very active clinician and lecturer, presenting to students and graduates in all branches of the Health Sciences, both locally and internationally. Over the years he has held a number of positions within his specialty including, the Presidency of the International Association of Paediatric Dentistry, The Australasian Academy of Paediatric Dentistry and the Australian and New Zealand Society of Paediatric Dentistry. Professor Widmer co-edited both the very popular "Handbook of Pediatric Dentistry" now in its fourth edition and in seven languages and the booklet "Paediatric Dentistry: Dental Care for Children. A guide for parents".

Richard's clinical work is all about making the dental visit one to remember, from the first visit of a child and the family to the sensible decisions on the need for dental work for many others. The oral health visit is really a health visit and the dental team have to see themselves as part of the total health picture from encouraging new parents to have their child immunized, or to use appropriate restraint in their car, or encouraging prevention in sports activity and of course maintaining excellent oral health for all children especially those with co-morbidities.

The Child's Face: Looking versus Seeing

The recognition of the way infants and children grow physically, socially, and intellectually — is paramount to recognizing the subtle variations in appearance that present each day in our clinics. With this understanding clinicians can provide a more detailed examination, diagnosis, treatment plan for their child patients.
