Speakers and Lectures

Dr. Angus Cameron

Dr. Angus Cameron

Dr. Angus Cameron is currently an Associate Professor of Paediatric Dentistry Department at several universities including the University of Sydney, University of Newcastle, and the Charles Sturt University in Australia. He travels the world to lecture on topics associated with paediatric dentistry, particularly on issues relating to special needs healthcare. He has co-authored reference books on the topics such as Paediatric Dentistry At A Glance, and the Handbook of Paediatric Dentistry.

Conundrums in Pediatric Dentistry

One would probably be able to come up with a long list of difficulties encountered with child management. It’s no secret that management of a child can often be vexing. Whether a child may or may not be willing and able to accept treatment, this lecture will discuss tough situations clinicians often face with children and how to manage such.

Preventive, Restorative and Prosthodontic Care for Children with Special Health Care Needs

Children often require complex prosthodontics rehabilitation due to trauma or the presence of a range of dental anomalies. A multidisciplinary approach to the management of conditions is essential. Appropriate treatment is often difficult due to issues of age, behaviour management, a transitioning dentition and a lack of experience in managing, often quite rare conditions. This presentation will highlight the prosthodontics challenges we encounter when treating children, in particular those with special needs. Many of the conditions that will be shown are unique and uncommon, and management is often anecdotal. However, an understanding of growth and development is important in allowing the formulation of a treatment plan that is appropriate for a child at any age. This presentation will focus on the management of traumatic tooth loos, the congenital absence of teeth and the management of disorders of enamel and dentine. There will also be an emphasis on the involvement of clinicians in other disciplines and the development of long-term treatment planning.

The Challenges of Remote Oral Health: An Australian Perspective for the Philippines

Early childhood caries remains a significant issue for children living in remote and regional areas in Australia. The release of the Little Children are Sacred (2007) Report and the Northern Territory National Emergency Response, demonstrated that most of the children had extensive dental caries. This presentation will demonstrate a model of care that was developed to manage children living in remote locations in the Northern Territory of Australia. The enormity of the problems facing Indigenous children in remote communities cannot be underestimated. This model of care available for remote children was as an emergency response. It highlighted the difficulties in providing adequate sustainable oral health systems to enable long-term oral care for children living in remote communities.

Dr. Bo Danielsen

Dr. Bo Danielsen

Dr. Bo Danielsen is the School Director of School of Oral Health Sciences at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. He is President of Danish Society of Periodontology and also a former President of the Dental Health Without Borders -Denmark.

Controlling Caries with Minimally Invasive Operative Treatments

Based on advances in science and research on dental materials and adhesives, a new understanding of cariology and remineralization, and changes in diet practices leading to increased caries prevalence have propelled the evolution of caries management from G.V. Black's invasive "extension for prevention" to conservative "minimally invasive". Learn the scientific basis of these new methods of caries management for improved patient experience and conservation of tooth structure.

Sugars, Periodontal and Systematic Diseases from Young to Old

Current research suggests that a high frequency consumption of added sugars either in food or beverages is associated with periodontal disease, independent of known common risk factors. This means that consumption pattern may contribute to the systemic inflammation observed in periodontal disease and associated non-communicable diseases. The lecture will discuss the role of sugar intake in the pathophysiology of periodontal disease.

Dr. Shereen Lim

Dr. Shereen Lim

Dr. Shereen Lim is a general dentist with 20 years of experience from Perth, Western Australia. She completed the Graduate Diploma in Dental Sleep Medicine program from the University of Western Australia in 2013.

Her work in private practice is restricted to early interceptive and myofunctional orthodontics, tongue tie management and oral appliances for sleep disturbed breathing.

Unraveling Tongue Ties: From Infancy to Adulthood

Tongue tie is a common condition that has been well linked to breastfeeding issues like poor latch and pain in some cases.

There is now growing awareness that restricted tongue function may have implications on other functions including speech, feeding, facial development, breathing and posture throughout the lifespan. The decision on if and when to intervene is a controversial topic and often times tongue ties remain undiagnosed despite significant functional concerns.

This presentation will provide an overview of the compensations and symptoms that may arise throughout the lifespan when normal tongue mobility is restricted. It will offer a review of the current evidence base associating tongue ties to various functional problems and insight into areas of new research.

Assessment and Management of Tongue Ties in Children

There has been a rapid increase in public awareness, clinical interest and published literature in topic of tongue ties in recent years.

Dental professionals are well positioned to play a key role in the assessment and management of this condition. Yet many have not been offered much training on this topic or normal tongue function.

This presentation is aimed to help dental professionals understand the implications of tongue tie/restricted tongue function in childhood. It will cover the importance of a functional history, what to look for, and a team approach to management when intervention is required.

Full Coverage Crowns: Restorations for Deciduous Teeth

In dentistry, treatment of carious milk teeth is a special challenge. Not only is the psychological aspect different from that of adult patients, but also there are anatomical and morphological differences. Primary anterior teeth can be especially challenging due to their esthetic requirements.

This lecture discusses the various options that are available for full coverage restorations for the primary dentition such as stainless steel pediatric crowns to Zirconia crowns to Laser Sintered Hybrid Glass crowns, when restoring the deciduous tooth. A step by step procedure that provides a simplistic approach when restoring the deciduous tooth will be taught through the use of the latest esthetically driven and minimally invasive pediatric crowns.

DEMO: Procedure on the use of the latest full coverage crowns will be demonstrated on the models of deciduous teeth. Delegates will be given the opportunity to practice the use of these crowns on plaster models.

Stem Cells in Dentistry

Scientific advances in molecular biology and tissue engineering provide the basis for this lecture as an introduction to stem cell technologies in Dentistry. This lecture will give an overview of stem cells and its use in Medicine and Dentistry, as well as relevant scientific advances in molecular biology and tissue engineering.

Behaviour Guidance

This presentation will discuss methods for accurately assessing a child’s development, temperament, personality and fears. Such an assessment allows for prediction of, and preparation for, a child’s behavior and response to dental treatment.

Behavior guidance for infants, children, adolescents, and persons with special health care needs, with a variety of techniques, will be discussed. This presentation will also describe patient selection and an approach to customize behavior guidance techniques to the individual patient in order to provide care that is both safe and effective.

Pediatric Oral Trauma

Trauma to the head and neck area, and oral trauma in particular, is very common in children and can be the result of accidents or physical abuse. The management of oral trauma in pediatric patients has developed in recent years with the accumulation of a large body of strong clinical studies. This presentation will discuss new guidelines in the identification, diagnosis, prevention and management of soft tissue, boney and dental trauma. Techniques and materials for the immediate and long-term care of traumatized teeth will be presented.

Also discussed will be possible complications and factors that may affect prognosis for successful outcomes. Dental trauma in both the primary and permanent dentition will be presented. Also, management of the behavioral and social impact of oral trauma as a result of physical child abuse will be addressed.

Esthetic Restorations for Fractured Young Permanent Anterior Teeth

Trauma and eventual crown fracture of an immature permanent incisor is a common occurrence among children in the early or middle mixed dentition stage. When the crown fracture involves a pulpal exposure, then the situation presents as both a restorative and endodontic challenge. Dilemmas such as when to restore, what material to use, and how to manage the trauma and its sequela over time requires long term planning. This lecture will present options for the restoration of the young permanent incisors, with considerations for involvement of the pulp and periodontium.

Antibiotic Resistance: Public Health and Dental Implications

Antibiotics are prescribed by dentists for management of dental infections. Infections from untreated dental caries are usually managed by extraction of the offending tooth or teeth or root canal treatment. There are reports that dentists prescribe antibiotics inappropriately and patients tend to self-medicate with antibiotics. These factors contribute to increase in antimicrobial resistance which is now considered a global public health problem. Most developed countries have devised antimicrobial stewardship strategies. In the Philippines, the medical profession developed guidelines on prescribing antibiotics especially in hospitals; however, none exists for the dental profession. This lecture intends to discuss the public health and dental implications of antibiotic resistance and call for action to address this pending public health crisis.

Myofunctional Therapy for Patients with Tongue and Lip Tie

Tongue or lip tie and its associated problems are often managed surgically to release the thick or short band of soft tissue. However, most cases still need a phase of myofunctional therapy to experience the full benefits of the soft tissue release. This lecture will show patient cases that benefitted from myofunctional therapy, its indications and how management can be performed with myofunctional therapy.
